Nursery Schools

What's the difference between nursery and preschool?
Preschools usually work around a formal curriculum and trained teachers - making them a little more expensive! Nursery schools are usually a more relaxed learning environment and more flexible enrolment terms. They are also cheaper and vary greatly.

What age is a preschooler? Ages up to 4 is considered preschooler with toddlers are 1 - 3 year old bracket. Basically 4-year-old are not 'toddling' around any more and so are no longer toddlers!

What does preschool mean? A preschool, or nursery school, is a pre-primary school, or play school for early childhood education. Preschool is for children before they begin compulsory education at primary school.

Is Pre K considered preschool? Pre K schools are pre-kindergartens.

It's amazing they do lots of fun dress up days like pyjama day and they do lots of fairs and include everyone and if there is a problem they can fix it. Also if there has been a situation like somebody has died they will make sure you feel better they also do that in the junior school

Great school. My daughter is extremely happy here and this is reflected in her love for school and learning. Really supportive atmosphere and great staff - can't fault it!

Selly Oak Nursery School

26 Tiverton Rd, Birmingham B29 6BP, UK – 0121 472 1700

Amazing nursery! Children were ahead of the curriculum when ready for reception. They care deeply for all families while going above and beyond to ensure every child has the best start to their education in a areas, maths, art, forest school, English all children leave with maths and writing skills

When I initially applied for my son to have a place at Selly Oak Nursery School, it was because it was an outstanding rated nursery and I wanted my precious 3-4 year old little boy to have the best start to his educational life as possible. What struck me as unique about the nursery was its clear emphasis on education for the future, whilst at the same time nurturing each child in the present as an individual who could be all that they choose to be. I was not looking for a nursery, I was looking for a lot more than that. I was looking for a nursery school, and as such wanted a place that was more than just a childcare provider and that offered my son the structure in education that he would need to prepare for the transition to Primary School. I had been continually impressed since his admission to the nursery with the staff, activities, learning opportunities and care given to my son. Before he began at the nursery he was a very different child; he was incredibly shy, barely talking much at all to anyone outside of his family group, and slightly delayed in his speech and communication. What I wanted for him was a place he could call his own, where he would learn for the future and be part of an inclusive community of children and teachers. This wonderful place provided him with that in the bucket load, and I will always be grateful for that. He is now a 5-year-old who has almost finished Reception at an outstanding primary school, who is confident both in terms of the rigours of phonics and mathematics, but also importantly with himself as an individual. The nursery gave him the chance to know what it is to be part of a school community, one where he was cared for in a genuinely positive and encouraging way, and gave him the chance to flourish. Selly Oak Nursery School turned my little boy from a child that was introverted, shy, and anxious, to a child that is supremely confident, infectiously curious, and incredibly keen to learn. The nursery embraced anything that interested my son, and opened his eyes to so many new interests ranging from minibeasts, 3D shape drawing, mud kitchens, bread making, role play, sitting down and reading stories, construction... I am so proud of him, but more importantly he is proud of himself, which is such a happy thing for me to see. My child would not have flourished half as much in a structured Primary School environment (where he is now meeting and exceeding expectations) if it were not for the approach Selly Oak Nursery School took with him and his learning – so much so that my youngest daughter will be attending the Nursery School in September. This place is more than just its outstanding OFSTED report; it is an outstanding community of teachers, parents and children, with a strong belief in the importance of education for all children. I wouldn’t recommend anywhere else.

This is one of the best school in the UK that I have been to and I am also a pupil in the school who will leave soon but I will never forget this school! 😄

Independent Schools

King Edward's School

Edgbaston Park Road, Birmingham B15 2UA, UK – 0121 472 1672

I have two sons at the school and both have benefited from the academic focus the school provides and the opportunity to develop both intellectually and socially. For a provincial day school, its outlook is remarkably non-parochial. It fosters a tolerant and almost international outlook. It has yet to reach a needs blind admissions system but for a UK school gets close. The fact that it offers a generous assisted places scheme speaks volumes about its ethos and commitment to social mobility and inclusion. It is well known in the Midlands but deserves more national recognition. My boys are lucky and thankfully they realise it.

The best school in England. U have to put ur son in this amazing place!

I used to go to this school years ago. My headteacher at the time name was Mr Matthews. I remember once he came on Good Morning Britain. It was regarding toy safety. Mrs Astel, Mr Gill, Sue, the art teacher that's all I remember lol. I used to love taming the ponies Gloria the cat 😻. I am very old now. I am married with three gorgeous princesses aged 8,7 and 5. I am now in search of a good job preferably in office administration side or as a classroom assistant. I have 10 yea nors experience in office administration level 1 & level 2. I have also completed level 1 and level 2 in classroom assistant NCFE. I worked voluntary at Starbank Primary school, in the nursery, Pimaston Centre Shirley, 524 Centre Stratford Road, Greet Primary School academic year. I am at this present moment in time looking for part time work preferably after 10.00/10.30 am. Tbh I think I've done considerably well despite myself spending all my education years at a special school including going to South Birmingham College doing different courses then going to Adult Education Centre Stratford Road. Even though I don't have a degree or standard 5-7 GCSE'S at least I have a level 1 in Maths and English level 2. Equivalent to GCSE English.

Cherry Oak School

60 Frederick Rd, Birmingham B29 6PB, UK – 0121 464 2037

This is a fantastic school. My eldest child left a few years ago and the youngest is currently in Lower Key Stage 2. My boy is so happy going to school every day and this credit goes down to the staff. The teachers and support staff are amazing; they are so helpful and approachable. They clearly appear to have their pupil’s best interests at heart. This is evident in the progress that both of my children made. The SLT have been wonderful with the guidance and support they have given me over the years and I am truly happy with the education service they have provided. Thank you, to all the staff at Cherry Oak. Your help and support is much appreciated and it’s people like you who make a difference to society!

After a bad start at a main stream school, we are delighted that our daughter is thriving at Cherry Oak. The school and staff create a nurturing and extremely happy environment. The result is that our daughter now looks forward to school, comes home content and calm and we can see that her social skills, awareness of the world around her and her ability to express herself are coming on in leaps and bounds. The communication with home is amazing with the home-school daily diary being used effectively to inform and advise. We love the anecdotal comments that show that our daughter's class teachers enjoy working with her and really understand how to support her. We were very impressed at the recent parent meeting - all staff are so welcoming and as well as getting updates from staff, we had the opportunity to view our daughter's folder. It was fabulous to see photographs of our daughter involved in many fun and educational activities and to read reports on her progress. All staff know the pupils well and take an interest in what they enjoy. Nothing is too much trouble when I phone and the school regularly arranges opportunities for parental involvement as well as extra curricular opportunities for the children such as going to a concert or going swimming. We look forward to seeing our daughter progress and grow in confidence at this very caring and child-centred school.
